Now that your iPhone is powered up, you may want to protect its beautiful look and feel to ensure your iPhone stays brand new inside as well as out.

The iPhone, in contrast to the iPod, has a brushed metal back, which doesn’t scratch or smudge easily, if at all. The front of the iPhone isn’t quite so durable. Basically you’ve got one gorgeous slab of glass lying atop your iPhone. This class is actually quite durable, and after logging hundreds of hours with my iPhone nestled in my pocket, I’ve yet to incur any scratches, nicks, dents, or anything else that could fall under the damage category. However, that’s me, and I admittedly handle my iPhone with kid gloves. Depending on what kind of an owner you are, you might want to consider one of many screen protectors available for the iPhone. Screen protectors provide a transparent shield of plastic between your gorgeous slab of glass and the larsh would of pointy things surrounding it

No matter how careful you are with your iPhone, the biggest danger is an unprotected drop onto a hard surface. The most compelling reason you might want to grab yourself some sort of iPhone case is to ward off – or at least partially protect against – the internal and external damage that dropping your iPhone could cause. Cosmetic damage is a bummer: Your iPhone won’t look as new and shiny. Internal damage can mean the end of your iPhone.

You’ve made the purchase and you made in home – with a quick stop at book store to pick up the book you’re currently holding – and you’re ready to start using the phone. Not so fast, hot shot. You’ve got some setting up to do. Your first step is activation. Instead of waiting inside a cell phone store, you actually set up teh iPhone yourself using Apple’s music management software called iTunes. Here’s how you do it.

If you are already running an Apple OS X machine purchased in the last couple of years, you probably already have iTunes installed. Windows users may or may not have already installed iTunes. Never mind that, because you want to make sure you have the latest version anyway. Open up a web browser and type apple(dot)com/itunes/download into the address bar.

Once you’re there. Click the download button in order to start downloading the iTunes installer. Apple asks for an email address, but if you don’t feel like giving yours away you don’t need to. The iTunes website should automatically detect the right operating system(Max OS X v/s Windows XP or Windows Vista) and send you the correct version. If you’re using a Linux machine, you’ll have to borrow another computer or install a version of Windows in order to set up your iPhone.

Done downloading? Good. Now find the file you’ve just downloaded and open it. Once you have iTunes installed, it’s time to start up the program. Under OS X. the iTunes app shows up in the dock as a CD with a music mote on top in Windows, you have to go into your Start menu, find the iTunes folder, and then click on iTunes.

Like the iPod. the iPhone doesn’t have an easily replaceable battery. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to replace the battery yourself, and even if you did, don’t count on Apple to hand you a new iPhone if something goes wrong. But if you’re under warranty(AppleCare), battery replacement is free. If you don’t have AppleCare, or it run out, Apple will charge you $79 and a $6.95 shipping fee so replace it. In the plus side, the iPhone’s battery life is impressive, even if you do a lot of talking, iPodding, and web browsing. Just remember, a properly conditioned battery is a happy battery.

The iPhone is, first and foremost, a cell phone, However, as Apple Inc’s CEO Steve Jobs said when unveiling the iPhone at MacWorld 2009, it’s these three devices integrated together that makes the iPhone such a remarkable piece of hardware. More specifically, the thing that makes the iPhone as such so great isn’t even in the hardware itself – the secret sauce is in the software.

That’s right – it’s the software that makes the iPhone such a revolutionary phone. Not only does the iPhone have easy-to-access speed dial lists, call history, and contacts, but there’s a giant traditional dial pad as well. But most phones have this already, you say, so what’s different here? In one world: integration. It’s in the way that you can easily bring up your friends addresses in Google Maps, the flawles way they sync with Address Book on the Mac and Outlook on the PC, and the convenient way you can quickly assign unique ringtones and pictures to all your contacts. These functions are present to other phones, of course, but they require a Batman-like level of technical knowledge to get to.

Then, of course, there’s the iPod in you iPhone, Apple’s taken everything that was great about the music player you (most likely) already own and they’ve made it even better. Seriously. Instead of the touch-sensitive Click Wheel, you’re got an entire screen to frolic around on. If you tilt the iPhone to the side, you get the beautiful Cover Flow mode, which lets you flip through your album covers like you would on your shelf (assuming you own both albums and a shelf to place them on). Plus, there’s gigantic album art whenever you’re playing a song, one click access to many functions that were up to four-clicks away on an iPod, and convenient integration with the rest of the iPhone’s features. What do we mean by that? How about automatically pausing a song when you’ve got an incoming call?

Lastly, the iPhone ventures into territory previously only explored by hard-to-use smartphones. What do we mean? We mean that it’s a full-featured internet communicator as well. There’s Safari, Apple’s internet browser, which gives you desktop quality web browsing Mail application, which is as close to desktop quality as we’ve seen on a phone this side of BlackBerry communicators. Add to that mini-applications like Google Maps, whether, stocks, and YouTube, not to mention web-based applications and the inevitable future software updates and new applications from Apple, and you’ll feel comfortable leaving your laptop behind whatever you go.

So why go with an iPhone when you could go with a smartphone that has similar functionality? For one, there’s never been a phone with an iPod built in. Using an iPod compared with using the media players on other phones is like the difference between flying from LA to New York first class and driving there in an old Pinto. Both will get you to your destination, but one gets you there in class, style, and comfort, while the other makes you want to give up and go home before you even start, Expend this concept to the all the iPhone’s features, and you’ll understand why the device is so innovative.

If your PC or Mac is a recent model, it probably is ready to work with whichever new iPod you choose. If it’s older, or if it’s a budget model, or if you’ve picked up an older iPod, you may need to add new components

Here are the requirements for an iPod classic, an iPod touch, an iPod nano, an iPod shuffle, or an iPhone:

A PC running windows Vista(Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise Edition) or either window XP Home Edition or Windows XP professional with Service Pack 3, or a Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.10(Tiger) ir Mac OS X 10.5(Leopard).

A USB port. It’s best to have a high-power USB 2.0 port, although you can scrape by with a USB 1.x port if you’re prepared to be patient. This USB port must deliver enough power to recharge the iPod or iPhone. If your keyboard has a built-in USB port (as many Apple keyboards do), chances are that it doesn’t deliver enough power for recharging.

An optional drive(a CD drive ot a DVD drive) if you want to be able to rip songs form CDs to put on the iPod or iPhone.

A CD burner if you want to burn CDs from iTunes, or a DVD burner if you want to be able to burn both DVDs and CDs (Most modern optical drives include burning capabilities).

Why USB 2.0 makes a Huge Difference to using an iPod or iPhone

USB 2.0 is up to 40 times faster than USB 1.x, so you’ll definitely want USB 2.0. If you have the choice. USB 1.x has a top speed of 12 megabits per second(Mbps), which translates to a maximum transfer of about 1.5 MB of data per second. USB 2.0 has a top speed of 400 Mbps, which gives a data transfer rate of about 60 MB per second.

As a result of this difference, loading an iPod via a USB 2.0 port will go far faster than via a USB 1.x port. The difference is most painful when you’re loading an iPod classic, but you’ll feel the pinch of USB 1.x even with the lower capacity of an iPod shuffle or an iPod nano.Apple will no doubt release higher-capacity iPods and iPhones in the years to come, but USB will be improving its act too. USB 3.0, known as SuperSpeed USB, will provide up to 5 gigabits per second(Gbps), will be backward compatible with USB 2.0 and is expected to arrive in 2010.

If you’s refer not to pay full price for an iPod or iPhone, consider the alternatives:

Buy a fefurbished iPod or iPhone from Apple: Apple sells refurbished iPods and iPhones at a discount – sometimes up to a third off the normal price. To find them, search the Apple store for refurbished iPod or refurbished iPhone. These iPods and iPhones have a one-year limited warranty, which you should read before buying one. You can also buy AppleCare to extend the coverage, although this is typically worthwhile only for the most extensive models.

Buy a reconditioned iPod or iPhone from another vendor: eBay and other sites carry reconditioned iPods and iPhones. However, you will not normally get a warranty, and it may be hard to determine the quality of the reconditioning.

Grab an old iPhone or iPod when a relative or sibling upgrades: If you know someone who simply must have the latest technology, get ready to jump in line for their existing device.

One hundred twenty gigabytes is a luge amount of music – around 30,000 four minute songs at the ipod classic’s default audio quality, or enough for about 80 days solid listening. It’s also a decent amount of video: about 700 hours at the compression rate the iTunes Store uses. But unfortunately, you don’t actually get the amount of hard disk space that’s written on the iPod or iPhone.

There are two reasons for this, First you lose some hard-disk space to the device’s operating system (OS – the software that enables it to function) and the file allocation table that records which file is stored where on the disk. This happen on all hard disks and solid-state devices that contain operating systems, and costs you anywhere from a few megabytes on the iPod shuffle to a few hundred megabytes on the iPhone.

Second, the capacities of the iPods and the iPhone are measured in “Marketing gigabytes” rather than in real gigabytes. A real gigabyte is 1,024 megabytesm a megabyte is 1,024 kilobytes, and a kilobytes is 1,024 bytes. That makes 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024*1,024*1,024 bytes) in a real gigabyte. By contrast, a marketing gigabytes has a flat billion bytes (1,000*1,000*1,000 bytes)- a difference of 7.4 percent.

So an iPod or iPhone will actually hold 7.4 percent less data than its listed size suggests(and minus more for the OS and file allocation table). You can see why marketing folks choose to use marketing megabytes and gigabytes rather than real megabytes and gigabytes – the numbers are more impressive. But customers tend to be disappointed when they discover that the real capacity of a device is substantially less than device’s packaging and literature promised.

The iPod classic is a protable music and video player with a huge capacity, a rechargeable battery good for 8 to 15 hours of music playback (less if you watch a lot of video), and easy-to-use controls.

The iPod classic is built around the type of hard drive used in small laptop computers and comes at this writing only in a 120GB capacity. (The capacity is engraved on the back of the iPod.) Larger hard disks are available, but not yet in the slimline format that the iPod classic needs. So far, as hard-disk manufacturers have released higher-capacity hard disks. Apple has continued to release higher-capacity iPods, so the maximum capacity seems certain to rise. The more space on the iPod’s hard disk, the more songs, video, or other data you can carry on it.

The iPod classic has a 2.5 inch color screen with a resolution of 320*240 pixels, which is called Quarter VGA resolution, or QVGA for short. (VGA resolution is 640*480 pixels – twice as much in each direction, so four times as much overall.) The screen can display videos, photos, and album covers as well as the iPod’s menus, information about the song that’s currently playing, and text-based items, such as your contacts, calendars, and notes.

Like the iPhone, the iPod touch has a large, touch-sensitive screen that you use to control most of its functions, from playing back songs and videos to surfing the web via a wireless network and sending mail.

The iPod touch has an on/ off button on the top, a volume rocker button on the side, and the Home button below the screen. It has a minimailst built-in-speaker that’s just about adequote for games, but you’ll want to use headphones or exiternal speakers for listening to any audio you want to hear well

Watching videos from YouTube

Getting maps, weather reports, stock quotes, and other handy information

The advantages and disadvantages of Flash Memory

Except for the iPod classic, which uses a hard drive, all iPods and the iPhone use flash memory chips for storage.
Flash memory has two main advantages:

Flash memory is shockproof, so the iPod won’t skip unless you damage it badly enough to prevent it from playing.

Flash Memory uses far less power than a hard disk – around 1/30 of the amount a hard drive takes – so the iPod or iPhone can run a good time on a smaller battery than it would otherwise need.

The disadvantage of flash memory is that it is still much more expensive per gigabyte than hard disks. This is why there is such a vast difference in capacity between the iPod classic(120GB) and the next-most capacious iPod, the iPod tough(32 GB)
